WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) addressed the House floor today, expressing his concerns over the U.S. government's approach towards Iran and its affiliated groups. Carter's remarks centered around the Stand Against Houthi Aggression Act, a bill he is proud to support, which aims to reinstate sanctions on Iran-backed Houthis.
Carter criticized the Biden Administration's decision to remove the Houthis from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, stating, “This was a terrible, terrible misjudgment that mirrors this administration’s complete lack of authority on issues of national and international security.” He highlighted the threat posed by Iranian-backed terrorist organizations and emphasized the need for the U.S. to take a stronger stance against state-sponsored terrorism.
The proposed legislation, H.R. 6406, would designate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization once again and impose immediate sanctions on individuals associated with the group. Carter urged for accountability, stating, “It’s time to hold Iran and its proxies accountable for their actions.”
In a direct appeal to his colleagues, Carter emphasized the importance of standing against antisemitism and state-sponsored terrorism, declaring, “If President Biden refuses to lead, I hope this body will step up in his absence.” He concluded by stating, “Anything less than that, Mr. Speaker, is unacceptable.”
The impassioned remarks by Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding U.S. policy towards Iran and the Middle East, urging for a robust response to counter the influence of Iranian-backed groups.
