Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter has cosponsored a bipartisan bill to establish Georgia’s first National Park, introduced by U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, Rep. Austin Scott, and Rep. Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.

The Ocmulgee Mounds Park and Preserve Establishment Act aims to designate Ocmulgee Mounds and its surrounding areas in Middle Georgia as a National Park and Preserve. This initiative has garnered support from various members of Georgia's Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Carter, who emphasized the importance of preserving the state's history and boosting the economy through increased tourism.

According to Sen. Ossoff, the legislation is a significant step towards highlighting Georgia's rich cultural heritage by establishing the first National Park and Preserve in Macon-Bibb County and Middle Georgia. Senator Reverend Warnock echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the economic and cultural significance of Ocmulgee Mounds to the state.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation has also played a crucial role in the development of the bill, with Principal Chief David W. Hill expressing full support for the proposed National Park and Preserve unit. Additionally, local officials and organizations have rallied behind the initiative, recognizing the ecological, cultural, and economic benefits it could bring to the region.

Various leaders and stakeholders, including Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller and Chairman Dan Perdue of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, have voiced their support for the establishment of the National Park and Preserve. They underscored the importance of preserving the region's natural and cultural resources for future generations while fostering economic development and environmental conservation.

The bipartisan efforts to create Georgia's first National Park and Preserve have received widespread endorsement from key organizations and leaders, reflecting a collaborative approach to safeguarding the Ocmulgee Mounds and its surrounding areas. The proposed legislation aligns with the long-standing efforts to honor the Muscogee Creek Nation and the region's vibrant history, culture, and natural beauty.
